State takes over key Nairobi county functions, a day after miguna miguna nomination

Thenational governmenthas takenover key county functions followingpoor service delivery.
There has been an outcry by Nairobiresidents over poor garbage collection, bad roads, insecurityinthe city centre, influxofhawkers andtraffic snarl ups. This has put GovernorMikeSonko’s administrationon the spot.
Sonkohas, however, putona brave face, claiming he is a victim ofnegative propaganda andsabotage.
Thebreakdown ofservice deliveryprompted President Uhuru Kenyatta to form a regenerationteamto transform the city andimprove services.
Theteam, co-chaired by Tourism CSNajib Balala and GovernorMikeSonkowas tasked withensuring garbage menace, poor roads, traffic jamsand housing challenges areaddressed.
On Tuesday, the teamoutlined its 30-day scorecard at a press conferenceat City Hall, where it emerged most of the county functions willnow behandled by the government.
Garbage collection, which is primarilya devolved function, willnow be doneby the Kenya Defence Forcesandthe NationalYouth Service. The teamsaidit has mapped out areas thatwillbe prioritised. A totalof381 garbage trucks will bedeployed.
Theteam hadpromised to clear garbage inall the 85wards within30days. However, the city is stillchocking withheaps ofuncollected trash.
Thecommittee also promised to launchthe Kenya Mortgage Refinance Companyto deliver affordablehousing, but Infrastructure andHousing CS JamesMacharia said sites for developingthe houses have been identified and actualwork wouldbegin in90days.
Thecommittee has six months, dividedinto 30,60 and180 days periods to transformthe city.
Commenting onthe deplorable state ofroads in the city, Macharia saidthe committee has mappedout allthe roads thatneed repairin the city and found theyrequire Sh4.1 billion.
He also saidthe Kenya Urban RoadsAuthorityhas taken over repairworks of allthe pathways, includingthose classifiedas county roads.
Already, the national governmenthas released Sh2.6 billion andasked the county to coughSh1.5 billion to carpet the roads.
“We have identified three Chinesecontractors thatwill work onthese roadsin Eastlands,” Macharia said.
