Maraga agrees with Raila on electoral reforms

Chief Justice David Maraga has joined the Opposition leader, Raila Odinga, in pushing for electoral reforms.
Speaking yesterday during the Law Society of Kenya Conference on last year’s Presidential petition, Maraga warned Kenya of serious consequences if it fails to cure its electoral system.
He warned against settling electoral matters in court saying the move is a ticking time bomb.
Maraga also raised the red flag on gaps in law relating to the annulment of Presidential elections and the withdrawal of a candidate from the top race.

“Whereas the law is clear about what happens should a candidate die in between, the lack of specificity in regard to withdrawal leaves us uncomfortable grey areas that require legislative attention,” said Maraga.
Maraga’s push for electoral reforms comes even as lawyer Ahmednassir Abdulahi accused him of creating room for Raila’s clamour to be sworn in with his verdict nullifying President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win last year.
