On May 6, Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said passengers using the SGR will pay a regulated fee priced at half the fare being charged by buses.

Word has it that passengers will initially pay Sh500 for the economy class and Sh800 for first class services in a journey that will take less than five hours, outwitting buses on speed, pricing and reliability. It will also give budget airlines a run for their money.

Macharia said passengers will enjoy a six-month offer during which there will be two train services plying the SGR – one to Nairobi and another to Mombasa – in a bid to gauge the demand for passengers
Mr president will officially launch the passenger on may 31 by boarding one of the trains from Nairobi to Mombasa
