Kenyans will get a reprieve from after Dairy processors announced that Milk will retail at Ksh10 cheaper from tomorrow.
The prices will be effected from Tuesday after an announcement by Brookside Dairy and New Kenya Co-operative Creameries.
John Gethi, Brookside Dairies Director of Milk procurement, on Monday cited increased raw milk intakes and assured that the markets would reach equilibrium level soon.
The announcement came after there was an increase in farm supplies and the importation of duty-free milk powder.
KCC stated that “the decision has further been informed by the move of the National Government intervention, through a gazette notice, allowing importation of duty-free milk powder to help bridge the raw milk shortage.”
Kenya experienced a prolonged drought from December 2016 to May 2017.
This saw the milk prices shoot up to an all-time high of Ksh65 per half- litre packet, the highest prices ever recorded. To ease on the shortage, Treasury Secretary Henry Rotich removed the duty on powdered milk which allowed 9,000 tonnes to be imported and bridge the raw milk shortage.
Farmers had earlier resulted to hawking to the markets in search for better prices instead of selling to the Dairy processors. Likewise, consumers preferred to buy raw milk directly from farmers rather than from shopping outlets which was more expensive.
