The life of IEBC Chairman stone faced Wafula Chebukati is in danger after government withdrew all armed security assigned to him and those of other two commissioners.
The move comes a day after three commissioners allied to DP Ruto resigned. Senate majority leader who is also DP Ruto’s handman the hawkish Kipchumba Murkonmen demanded that Chebukati resign immediately so that parliament can have an opportunity to appoint new commissioners. There were rumours that the three commissioners were pushed to resign by DP Ruto in a bid to derail the calls for a referendum that is expected to water down powers of the presidency.
Chebukati has said that with withdrawal of his security has exposed his life to danger.
Chebukati and two remaining commissioner security have been withdrawn.
The main reason for this move is to intimidate them to resign as major political players have been calling for resignation of iebc chairman chebukati after 3 iebc commissioners resigned yesterday.
Iebc chairman chebukati had said he will not resign even though the commission is not functional as it does not reach threshold of number of commissioners required to run the commission.
The opposition and government MPs and senators have joined hands in demanding for resignation of chebukati and this might be part of scheme to have him resign by withdrawing his Security.
The iebc chairman has been known to be incompetent and nearly plunged the country into constitutional crisis in run up to the repeat poll.
